Goodwins Theory of Music Videos

Image
In today's lesson we looked at Goodwins Theory, thinking about how we could use this in our music video. We watched an existing music video: 'Learning to Fly' by Foo Fighters. When watching it we applied his theory to the video and gave an example of where elements of his theory were in the video. This was very helpful as it gave us a good idea of how to do this in our own music video.

Key terms in music videos

Image
During todays lesson, we watched a few music videos and applied the key terms that we had learn to the video's. A prime example of a video which uses one of the key word's we had learn about (Intertexuality) is  30 Seconds To Mars- The Kill. Here is the sheet of work that we did in lessons.

What makes a successful music video

Image
In today's lesson we were given a list of existing music videos that our teachers recommend us to watch so we are able to recognize what makes a good music video. In the lesson we watched 'Look What you made me Do' by Taylor Swift which is a video that isn't on the list but our teacher thought would be a good one for us to watch. Whilst watching them we created a mind map of what makes an effective music video.

Pervious years rought cut Vs final cut

Image
After watching many existing music ideas, we then started to watch previous years music videos and began to pick apart the video's, by saying what we thought was good about them and what could be improved. We watched a pupils video from last year and compared their rough cut to their final cut. The group achieves an A for their music video. We later discussed how and why we thought they got an A for their project and took inspiration from their shots to use in our music video. From this, it has given us a good idea on what we can include in our music video in order to get an A as well as what not to include.

Active Watching- Miami, Will Smith

Image
We watched Will Smiths music video for his song called 'Miami' We then discussed that it was important to have a 50/50 narrative performance split as this was a common occurrence that we noticed with all the videos we analysed.

Editing in music videos

Image
We watched the music video 'Misery Business' by Paramore and discussed why we thought it was successful. We specifically focused on how the video was edited and how the editing of music videos varies depending on the genre. We also identified some things that we would be able to use for our music video.

Active Watching- Sound Garden analysis

Image
During today's lesson, we again used the analyzing place mat sheets and analysed the characteristics of this music video. This was of a different genre to yesterdays therefore this helped us deepen our understanding on features of the different genres.

Active watching- Radio head anlysis

Image
During today's lesson, as a class we analysed the music video 'Just' by 'Radiohead.' We done a detailed analysis to help improve our knowledge on music videos. We looked at things such as the Mise en Scene, Good camera angles, the editing and things that we can take for inspiration.

Promotion introduction

As this is our 2nd lesson on music videos, we decided to do some research into the promotion of artists. We looked at how we could 'Build Up' a bands name, so that when we come to film our music video and make our digi pack, we are able to promote our band correctly. We discussed points on how to build up a bands name. We thought that these points were essential to building up a bands reputation/image/name -Considering the genre of music an what colours would match it e.g heavy metal- Dark colour schemes -Ensure that the artist is portraying the correct look of the genre e.g. Indie genre, therefor artist must be wearing 'Indie, edgy, cool' outfits We also discussed that it is essential to keep a house style running through out the digi pack and advert so that it is clear they're advertising the same band.

First lesson on Music Videos!

Image
Today was the first day of our Music Video work! We were set off with a list of music videos to watch, including artists such as Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, Queen, Amy Winehouse and Coldplay. This list of music videos to watch will give us an insight as to what is in music videos, how they're set out, what they contain and how the audience watches these videos. After watching 12 music videos, as a class we wrote down what makes a successful DigiPack and Advert. Here is a image of the work that we did in this lesson.
