We are super happy to have completed all our evaluation videos and exported them. We have really enjoyed this coursework as challenging as it was! Big thank you to Bland, Ranft and Convery for all your help :)

DEADLINE DAY!!!

Image
Its the last hour before the deadline and our evaluation is a minute too long! We are working fast to cut out unnecessary information (and breathing) to try and get it within the 20 minute cut off!

Plan for the day before deadline day!!!

So today we have put a plan in place in order to try and get as much done so we aren't leaving anything too last minute. Today we plan to: Finish all blogs Edit Q2 and Q4 Finish Q1 Download the theme tunes of the TV shows  Screenshots of examples

DEADLINE DAY TOMORROW

As tomorrow is deadline day and we have now filmed all four videos, our aim is to edit and complete our evaluation for tomorrow. The plan today is: Helen edits question 2 Caitlin edits question 1 Olivia edits question 4 Lucy focuses on blogging

Audience Research on Digipack colour

In todays lesson we progressed very well with our digipack and advert as we don't have very long until the deadline. As a group, we couldn't deice which shade of blue looked better for the border of the digipack as 2 of us said the lighter shade and 2 of us said the dark shade. In order to decide on a colour we thought the best way to do this was to ask members of our target audience. So here is a video of our target audience saying which one they thought was best.  https://youtu.be/ZkNkOQ_wk24  You can see from the video that 2 out of the 3 people asked said they preferred the darker blue and gave good reasoning behind their choice. The 1 person that said she liked the blue gave the reason that it was her favourite colour. To get the professional and realistic look we don't think this is a good reason to choose the brighter blue. Therefore after this research and a discussion as a group (all of us voting the darker blue) we have decided to go for the darker blue. We are ...

Theme of our evaluation

Image
I have been looking more into how we could use the idea of TV shows in our video. Looking at how we could link the show with the question and make it entertaining for our viewers. Here are some of the ideas that I have came up with so far.

Filming for Q2 and Q4

Today during our lesson (p5) and after school we filmed these questions in a classroom. To make them look realistic, like the TV shows we changed our background setting and the location to look professional. For question 2 we used the TV show mastermind, to create this we used the blackboard background, turned all of the lights off and used the torches on our phones as a spotlight. For Question 4, we filmed it in the theme of The Gadget Show. To create this theme we again used the blackboard background but this time wrote the title on it to make it look realistic. This was the final part of our filming and all we need to do now is edit (quickly) in time for the deadline in Wednesday.

Question 4 script

How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages of your coursework? Presenter- Hello! This week on The Gadget Show we look at the use of media technologies in all aspects of a group of year 13s media coursework! Joining us today we have ____ and ____ who are excited to discuss their use of technologies. Thanks for joining us today! Answer 1- Thanks for having us. Presenter- So what technologies have you used throughout the project? Answer 2-Well we have used adobe premiere, adobe in design. Also, blogger and new media technologies such as YouTube, Facebook and Survey Monkey. Answer 1- Yeah, we have also used Dafont and Microsoft office. And during construction we used camera equipment such as lights, tripods, a shoulder mount, a dolly and a crane. Answer 2- We also used a sound recorder in our evaluation and green screen throughout the project. Lighting was also important to use we we used LED's and RED lights during constructi...

Question 2 Script

MASTERMIND-  How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advert)? (Presenter asks the questions from behind the camera, whilst the two/three contestants answer the questions in the chair) 1. Overall,  How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? Answer= The same image, font style and art work has been used on the digipack and advert allowing the audience to make connection between the 2 products. Overall the combination is effective at marketing our band by making their image thought-provoking. 2. What symbols and motifs have you used to link your video and ancillary texts? Answer=In the video we used the mask to represent the way society tries to destroy individuality and how people hide their true identity. We linked this to our digipak and advert by using a silhouette of our singer. This made it harder to tell who he was therefore masking his identity. This attracts an audience as...

Scriptwriting

Tomorrow Helen has frees all day apart from 4th so during this time she is going to write the scripts for Q2 and Q4. This is going to be done by using the answers and information the rest of us had written and transformed it into concise information that will read like a script. This will be in good preparation for our filming of Q2 and Q4 tomorrow night.

Plan for Question 4

Technologies we have used throughout the project: Adobe- Photoshop, Premiere and In design Blogger New Media Technology- YouTube, Facebook, Survey Monkey Dafont Camera Camera equipment- lights, tripods and shoulder mount etc.  Sound recorder Microsoft  Green Screen How did we use them? Adobe Photoshop- Used to edit photos that we used on our digipack and advert. Added a light blue filter to the image for the back of our digipack to make it link to the blue theme running throughout the digipack. Created a silhouette of Adam using a magic wand tool. Also used to add the image of out of focus fairy lights fit inside of Adams silhouette. Edit the image of the moon and city by editing the moon to look more round and professional. Adobe Premiere- The software used to add all of our footage and the song to construct our video. We created parallel editing by integrating two narratives together that then become one. Created an insert of a flash back to make the narr...

Planning Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advert) The same image, font style and art work has been used on the digipack and advert (show example of...) allowing the audience to make connection between the 2 products. Overall the combination is effective at marketing our band by making their image thought-provoking. What symbols and motifs have you used to link your video and ancillary texts? Mask- in the video we used the mask to represent the way society tries to destroy individuality and how people hide their true identity. We linked this to our digipak and advert by using a silhouette of our singer. This made it harder to tell who he was therefore masking his identity. This attracts an audience as they can relate to this feeling Light- We named our album 'Luminous' meaning to glow or give off light. We also used images of fairy-lights and a city landscape throughout our ancillary texts which all focused on light. We ...

Question 3 Response to feedback

80% of the public would delete your video. Therefore, we hope you have learned from your target audience that there are several things you need to change for our final cut.  1. The Band (4 images of band, select one which is Adam etc) 2. The performance location (4 images of location, select the drama studio) 3. The protagonist (4 images of protagonists, select Alex) 4.Wider range of locations (select all 4 images of locations used) 5. Story line (4 images, select plot twist)

Question 3 Planning (music video)

What have you learned from your audience feedback? We have chosen to do Watch, Download, Delete . (Snog, Marry, Avoid) The narrator (known as pod) will ask the question 'Would you Watch, Download or Delete this music video' The viewer will be looking down (as if watching the video on a screen) and say their answer. When we edit we will show the rough cut music video in the corner of the screen. Then after showing everyone's answers we will ask for their feedback. The answers are below. This will be followed by the same procedure for the final cut. Stage 1= Rough Cut 30% watch: "I liked the mirror scenes at the beginning when she was deciding whether to keep her mask off, the different angles used were effective, however I think you should show her taking the mask off and use an action match to do this as it would be more dramatic and draw the viewer in." "I love the use of the fixed lens on the guitar strumming, with the fairy lights in the backg...

Scriptwriting for Q1

In today's lesson we all wrote part of the script ready for tonight's filming.Olivia wrote the script for the music video, Lucy wrote about the digipack and Helen and Caitlin wrote about the advert. We then all came together to discuss the script as a whole and see if we could anything else. Together we wrote examples on the script as comparing ours to existing examples would be a very good thing to include. To make our video look like 'This Morning' we have stuck our script onto paper with the 'This Morning' logo on the back.

Q1 answers

Image
So over the weekend as planned I have came up with many different used, developed and challenged for the music video, advert and digipack. Here are the notes I have made so far:

Plan for Evaluation Q1

We have only 12 days until the Evaluation deadline, so we need to ensure we use are time effectively sand plan well so we meet the deadline. So our plan so far is over the weekend Olivia is going to do mind maps of all of the used, developed and challenged conventions for the music video, advert and digipack. Then on Mondays lesson with these notes we are going to write the script ready for filming on Monday evening. For this question we are filming it as 'This Morning' so we are going to have a producer from warp records, a creator of the advert and a creator of the digipack. We are going to ask each of these people how they have used developed and challenged conventions.

Final Advert and Digipack

Image
Here is our final digipack and advert which we are super happy with!!!!!!!! Only the evaluation to go, hell yeah.

Last Minute teacher feedback

Image
Just before exporting we thought we would get our teacher to look over our digipack and advert to see if there was any final changes we could make. Regarding our digipack he said that we should check all spellings but apart from that he said he really liked it. For our advert he said that in order to gain higher marks for 'originality' we should do something else to it to make it look different to the digipack as the image on the front of our digipack is very similar to our advert image. He suggested to maybe change the direction that Adam is facing or using a different image instead of the city lights on the advert or adding colour to the text. So, acting on our teacher feedback, we reversed the images to make Adam a silhouette on a background of lights. This looks much more effective as it is the same style as the front cover of our digipack however it isn't exactly the same which makes it more original which is what we were told to do. We also changed the direction whi...

Plan for meeting tomorrows deadline

The deadline has came upon us very fast, having only very little time to do it we have worked well together to ensure we meet it. Tomorrows lesson we plan to work on it very efficiently to ensure we get as much done as possible, Caitlin has frees for the rest of the morning so she is going to stay and work on it whilst the rest of the group joins her at break and lunch to help with any other final bits we may need to finalize. We are hoping to get it finished before the end of lunch to ensure any time for any technical issues or any last minute things we get told to change.

Song names research

Image
We thought it would be beneficial to do some research into the names of songs on CD's. So the first album I have looked at is Bad Blood by Bastille, the songs on there are: 1. Pompeii 2. Things we lost in the fire 3. Bad Blood 4. Overjoyed 5. These streets 6. Weight of living 7. Icarus 8. Oblivion 9. Flaws 10. Daniel in the Den 11. Laura Palmer 12. Get Home Throughout the 12 songs there appears to be a running theme of something along the lines of home and living. The longest song name seems to be 6 words however there is only one of them which suggests they may not be as popular. The majority of the other songs are made up of 1 or 2 words. Therefore I think our album should include more short songs than long songs. There is also 12 songs however this is an original album where as ours is a special edition therefore I need to find out how many songs are in a special edition.  Ed Sheeran's special edition CD has 17 songs altogether- 4 of them bei...

Luminous Explanation

After lots of discussion we have decided to name our album Luminous. The definition of Luminous= giving off light, bright or shining. The theme of our album is 'Change in society'. By using the idea of giving off light, we feel the word Luminous can symbolize the need for positive change in the world because of all the negative things happening.  The design of our digipak and advert will use the idea of bright and shining lights in the images and fonts.

Editing the back cover photo

Image
On Monday night I took the photo for the back cover. Today I edited it on Photoshop. I wanted to make the lights really stand out because our album is called Lumino us so lighting is really important on our digipack. I also felt the image should have an indigo tone to it because this links with our band name. After editing the image I felt that the Moon was too bright and blurry, the light expanded after editing. I used the Clone Stamp Tool to remove any excess light which wasn't wanted. Here is the before and after. Before After

Digipack progress

Image
We are carrying on with editing of the digipack in today's lesson. We have added a washed blue color on the background of the front cover, which is the color we are going to stick with through out our advert and digipack. We have also edited the lights on Adams silhouette, by layering images of different photos of lights, so it appears as through there is more lights on the image, making it busier, brighter and more vibrant. We have used tools on Photoshop, such as the contrast and brightness tool, which enabled us to play around with the sharpness of lighting on the front cover. We have also used Photoshop to add a cold filter onto the image of the band. We have noticed that indie album have a gritty cold vibe to them, so to portray this convention, we have added a opaque light blue filter over the top of the image, while turning the contract down on the image so the colors are duller. Here is a screen shot of our progress so far.

Analysis of our chosen songs on the album

Florence = Typical indie/rock/pop bands tend to name a song by a female name. Examples of this are Angie by The Rolling Stones, Lola by the Kinks and Michelle by The Beatles. We have chosen the name Florence because it means 'flower' which represents new life which we thought fit in with the theme of our album.  Boys= This word for the male gender represents a large group in society which links with our album theme.  Cold Coffee= We feel that this name can link to the lack enthusiasm in the world because it lacks warmth, and shows that society can be left emotionless.  Lovers and Leavers= This song name represents that people need love in society to be happy yet there is always so much loss as relationships break a part. Fake truths=This song name shows that even the truth can be a lie, showing that society is untrustworthy.  Aliens and Cows= We have chosen this name because we feel that it comes with a vibe of imagination and the idea of contrast and differen...

Succesful image of the moon

Image
We were lucky enough to get an amazing shot of the Super Moon that appeared at the weekend, thanks to Helen. Helen went on top of Northumberland Park's metro car park where she got a shot of the moon and its reflection with the city lights underneath. Helen also edited it by putting a blue filter over the image and editing the shape of the moon using the clone stamp. Now it matches our theme very well and will look amazing on our digipack. Using an image of the moon with a blue filter on creates a visual image of our band name 'indigo moon'. As there is city lights underneath the moon, this then links in with the name of our album 'Luminous' which means light which is the theme we have used on our digipack and advert. Therefore this image fits our digipack very well as it has a lot of meaning and representation behind it. We are going to use this on the back cover of the digipack, putting the song list over the top. Before After

Changing the name of our album

After coming terms with the fact we aren't going to be able to get good enough quality images of the moon and sea etc. we have decide to change the theme of our digipack and advert to a city theme. Therefore in order to link everything together we need to change the name of our album which we have decided to change to 'Luminous' this links to light which is a theme we are going to use across the digipack and advert. We believe this would be more realistic as we don't have to rely on good weather adn nature to get our images unlike the previous idea of the moon.

Digipak and Advert plan

Friday 1st- Helen photographed blue fairy lights close up for the CD Cover. Monday 4th- Helen and Lucy are going to the top of Northumberland Park car park at 6pm to photograph the view from the top to get the image of inside our template of the city at night. This image will be used on the digipak front cover inside our 'Adam' template. We will also use another image of the view for our background on the advert. Tuesday 5th- Photographing Adam in the studio for our template. Mid shot from the side and long shot from the side. THEN full band in grungy location.

Weekend discussion on evaluation

As planned, over the weekend we have discussed potential themes and ideas etc for our evaluation. here are some of the potential ideas we have came up with: Each question we are going to do in the theme of a tv show- this will be entertaining for people to watch instead of just doing a plain evaluation.  Some TV shows we thought may work well are: Jeremy Kyle, Big Brother, This Morning, Im a Celebrity, Strictly come Dancing, Mastermind, University challenge, and Countdown.  We have came to an agreement that we think working on each question together would be a better option than working on one each. This way we can all have an input on each question, generating better answers and a better quality video. We are all going to be in our video acting as a part of the TV shows whilst we get members of our target audience to be apart of our tv shows also.

Fonts for our digipack research

Image
We have started to research fonts we could use for the album cover- this includes The Back cover (Song names) The Front cover (Band name and album title) The Spine All interior pages We are going to ask our TA which fonts they think will look best on the digipack. Once we have gathered our results, we will then sit down as a group and analyse the results and decide if we agree with it all and justify. Back Cover and Front Cover Font From our research we have established that the songs on the back of Album covers are usually wrote in a thin, clear bold font. We have also notices that the text on the front cover of a digipack is also wrote in a similar font and is kept the same through out. Therefor, we have used the online website 'Da Font' to research some fonts that match our criteria. Here is a list of 6 fonts that we think match the conventions of a digipack. 1st Roboto 2nd Caviar Dream 3rd The Light Font 4th Occupied 5th Quick Sand 6th Aliens and Cows 7...

DigiPak and Advert- What is our initial plan?

Digipak Front Cover- Adam mid shot template in the centre. Inside his body figure will be an image of the city at night, edited with a blue filter. The rest of the cover will be blue. With white font for the album title (Luminous) and band name (Indigo Moon). Back Cover- The city at night, same image as inside Adam's figure, but covers the whole cover. Song names vertically written in the centre. Inside Cover- Band photo, drummer on end. Grungy location. CD Cover- Zoomed in blurred blue fairy lights. Advert Long shot of Adam in studio, filled his body figure with blue. Outside the figure be an image of the city lights, different image to digipak.

Digipak and Advert inspiration

Image
This piece of artwork from The 1975's album, The City, inspired us to use the city theme on our digipak and advert. Instead of using a purple filter effect we are planning to use a blue filter over ours, to link with Indigo Moon. We will take two different shots of a city view at night. One will be for the digipak, another for the advert. This image inspired us to use the template of our lead singer, Adam, on the front cover. We will take a mid shot of Adam in the studio. Then fill his template with our image of the city. On the back cover, will be the rest of the city image. Creating a see through effect. On the inside of the digipak, we plan to use a photo of the band. We will be taking photos of our band against the green screen. And editing it so that it is a blue background.

Evaluation Intro

Image
In todays lesson, we were talked through the evaluation. We made note of all of the questions and how to answer them in a video format. We learnt about the things we need to include in our video and  ways in which we could film our video. Over the weekend we are planning to discuss a group how we are going to film our evaluation in such a short space of time make it as good as possible. We are going to discuss the themes of our video, who is going to do what and how we are going to film it. 8

Existing advert mood board

Image
Lucy and Olivia have created this mood board for the advert, while Helen and Caitlin created their mood board for the digipacks. Lucy and Olivia researched different posters from a variety of bands and artists so we can get a rough idea of what they look like, what the general conventions are on them and how we can add our own spin of the advert. In a later blog post, we will start to analyse individual adverts and specifically pick out points on what we think makes a good advert and the main conventions of them. From this mood board of Adverts, the general idea of one is that they have a main image, the title of the band and the release date of the album,
